Make 2012 The Year You Get The Body You Want!

You know how you always have one body part you just love to hate? That one niggle area where, it seems no matter what you do, you just can’t make seem to make headway or create the look you long for?

For me, it was always my stomach.

I have a fairly long and lanky build, and am lucky enough to have naturally fairly lean legs. Mind you, pregnancy did change even that for me, but more on that a bit later :)

But my stomach. Ugh. I’ve been in the health industry for 12 years and it seemed that for most of that time, no matter whether I was lean and in shape or whether I was carrying a few extra kilos post-holiday, my stomach was never where I wanted it to be.

For you, it might be your lower body that stubbornly refuses to change. Or it could be your love handles. Possibly even those extra bits around the shoulder blades?! We all have the parts we love to hate, I don’t think that’s anything to be ashamed about.

The problem of course is that if you’re already eating well and working out regularly, those annoying parts are probably just the way you’re built. Right? After all, everyone knows you can’t spot reduce body fat! Eat well, exercise, and try not to let stuff get to you too much. Surely that’s the best recipe for success when it comes to being the ‘best you’ possible?

biosignature modulation – a revolutionary approach to fat loss

Well – maybe you can’t spot reduce. Not with the traditional methods at least.

Or maybe it’s not actually that simple!

Maybe, just maybe, the fact that you store fat in certain areas more so than others is about more than pure genetics or bad luck.

If you’ve heard of Charles Poliquin’s Biosignature you’ll know what I’m getting at here. If you haven’t – prepare to have some of your beliefs on spot reduction blown away!

In a nutshell, Biosignature is a unique method of determining body composition and at the same time gaining an insight into hormonal ‘blocking factors’. Blocking factors are things that might be preventing you from achieving optimal fat loss, strength and wellness.

Specifically, Biosignature provides information about why you store fat where you do – and how you can change that, fast. It is, quite literally, scientific spot reduction!

I know, it sounds too good to be true, right? But here’s something you may not know. Where you store your fat is a direct indication of how healthy and balanced your hormones are. For example -

    • Fat stored around the front of the stomach relates to an accumulation of the hormone cortisol
    • If you can’t budge that booty flab you may have been exposed to (or produced) an excess of the hormone oestrogen, or you could have poor gut health affecting oestrogen metabolism
    • If you have thick skinfolds on your calves you could have an issue with growth hormone – a key hormone for metabolism and fat loss – as well as liver toxicity.

It is, in all honesty, Biosignature is the most fascinating field I’ve ever studied in my 12 years as a health practitioner. And trust me, I’ve studied a lot!

And if you want to get down to the specifics of it, the results I have had with my clients over the past 4 or so years since using this tool have been nothing short of amazing. Certainly I always had good results as a trainer and nutrition coach, but there were also plenty of people along the way who simply didn’t seem to change no matter how well they ate or how much they exercised. Some of my ‘proudest’ client cases now are those people who come to me saying they’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work, or they are already doing above average in their health knowledge and efforts and yet still can’t budge the bulge.

21st century fat loss

Perhaps you find yourself nodding your head at the idea of doing everything right but yet still finding yourself frustrated by annoying plateaus.

So let’s get real about what it truly takes to transform your body in the 21st century. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the old method of calories in versus calories out just doesn’t work anymore, do you?

Nor would you be amiss to imagine that getting food and exercise down to a fine art is enough if your hormones are out of whack.

If you’re serious about wanting to break through a fat loss plateau and finally get the results you’ve always dreamed of then it’s time to get a little more scientific about things, so today I’d like to share with you 3 simple but incredibly powerful tips to transform your body uses some basic Biosignature principles.

1. Improve detoxification

Without an ability to detoxify effectively, it’s virtually impossible to get lean. Your fat cells are not made up of butter or avocado, but rather are full of toxins, and therefore detoxification is directly linked to fat loss. Being a good detoxifier depends on getting enough good nutrition, but also on being able to access that nutrition. By this I’m talking about your ability to digest and then absorb the nutrients in your food.

Therefore, two simple ways you can improve detoxification are firstly to choose high-quality organic foods and practitioner line supplements, and secondly to support digestion through supplements like glutamine, probiotics, and possibly hydrochloric acid, otherwise known as stomach acid.

2. Lower cortisol

Cortisol is a hormone that you release in response to stress. It’s an important hormone to help you stay focused when things get a little crazy, but it’s not one that you want running rampant in your body 24/7.

Unfortunately, the effects of a stressful and busy life can mean that you are constantly elevating cortisol in moderate amounts, and your system never has a chance to completely relax and recover.

Over time, cortisol elevation can result in increased fat storage around your belly button region, as well as higher levels of inflammation, aches and pains, and a tendency toward anxiety as well as poor sleep patterns.

In Biosignature we use specific nutrients to modulate cortisol and undo these adverse effects, but there are also some lifestyle changes that are quite effective.

You can manage the effects of excess cortisol by avoiding caffeine and other stimulants after lunch-time and after training, scheduling regular ‘time out’ or ‘play time’ (remember when you used to laugh all the time? A little laughter really is great medicine!), and practising good sleep habits including writing in a grateful journal at night to activate your sympathetic nervous system.

3. Modulate insulin

You’ve probably heard of insulin in regards to diabetes, and certainly it’s a hormone that often gets a bad rap. Of course every hormone exists for an important purpose and insulin is no exception, but it is nonetheless a hormone that we need to know how to manage. Resistance to insulin, through too much exposure to it, actually speeds up your ageing process. It also will cause you to retain and store additional body fat around the mid-section, creating that ‘apple’ type body shape, and gives you a higher risk of developing diabetes.

All of these things are particularly true for you if you’ve fallen prey to following conventional rules of nutrition, such as ‘eat a diet rich in whole grains, low in fats and with plenty of natural (or unnatural!) sugars’.

The typical Western diet is full of grains, fruits and other sugars, and often includes diet or low fat products. Not only can these foods cause and exacerbate the effects of too much insulin, but eating them often also means you are not eating adequate protein and good fats – both of which would help to manage insulin.

Modulate insulin by choosing a diet rich in organic lean proteins, good fats, and plenty of greens. Using natural blood sugar stabilisers like cinnamon, red wine vinegar, fresh lemon and lime, and avoiding low-fat foods and artificial sweeteners will also help you reduce the effects of insulin resistance – and finally release that stubborn belly fat!

the wrap up

Employing the advice I’ve given you in these 3 tips will have you on your way to a cleaner and leaner you, and will also boost your confidence as you realise that sometimes it’s really not your fault.

And as for my stomach? It’s still a work in progress on occasion.

Hey, I’m not perfect and I do still act out with my food and social life from time to time. But I have to say, it’s pretty nice to know that when I do I know exactly what it takes to get those nice neat lines of definition back in just a few days. Never mind being able to do so without starving myself or spending my every waking moment in the gym!

Life is Now. Press Play.
